The duvet story begins a few centuries ago with down comforters in Europe and silk comforters in Asia. Both comforters required a significant amount of time to make which gave them value. Also both types are excellent insulators but neither one was happy being washed in the local stream nor are they happy in a modern washer.
The value of the comforter along with the fact that it is difficult to clean lead to the "invention" of the duvet cover. Similar to the concept of a pillowcase the duvet cover protected the down or silk comforter from body oils and all the other elements that might soil it.
This development has resulted in the duvet cover of today being as much if not more of a fashion statement than just a protective covering. The overall duvet insert and cover have many advantages over alternate forms of bed covers. Some of the advantages that have boosted the popularity of duvet covers include:
Also with the passage of time comforters began to be made of materials that are more easily cleaned leading to comforters that are decorative in themselves not necessarily requiring a duvet cover.
It comes in a variety of materials and we are going to look at some of the better options for your home. Cotton or cotton blends will be a durable way to keep your comforter safe. It is going to be a cool breathable material that will suit any room or person plus is great for those warm summer nights. Polyester is going to a bit of a cheaper material to go with if prices are going to be an issue. It has the added bonus of being anti-allergy material but it does not breath too well. For those cold winter nights flannel is the way to go with your duvet cover. This material will keep you toasty warm but for those summer nights you will need to switch it up as you will be dying of heat exhaustion.
The duvet can be used by itself or fitted into a specially designed cover to prevent dirt and stains; this cover can be cleaned regularly. Cleaning a duvet may not be necessary unless it is dirtied or damaged beyond reuse in which case its easier to replace the old with a new one much like a mattress.
